Cabin Quilt
II was inspired by an A frame cabin with personal connections. In upstate NY, a cabin was built in the summer of 1971 by my uncle and friends. Countless family members and friends have slept over the years under the forest canopy. Famously built to include neither electricity nor plumbing. Campfire cooking provided many lessons on mastering fire and flame to cook your meals and then heat your dishwashing water. There’s a three-sided outhouse facing the woods where you might spy a deer or other woodland creatures. I have lifelong memories of swimming and spending time under this forested canopy.
The process of making was a huge learning experience to capture the essences of this special building within a quilt format. It was partially pieced together and partially appliquéd to recreate the nature of the cabin. There were some compromises made with the actual A frame shape in the design. In the end, it feels like a cabin. This was made for my grandmother’s 90th birthday. The A frame was removed in winter of 2019 and a new cabin was finished in Fall of 2020. This quilt also functions as a memorial quilt. A quilt to remember all the good times enjoyed in the past and to warm the new house.
